Cybi Striders Race Report 15/01/18
Tour de Llyn Llydaw
9 Cybis welcomed in 2018 not with a bang, but with a splash at Llyn Llydaw. An event not for the faint hearted (or those feeling a little worse-for-wear…), this slightly soggy race saw competitors scramble though mud, rocks, and a conveniently placed bog.
First Cybi home was Irfon Rowlands, who also won the M50 category in a time of 53:38. Next through were Peter Jones who came second in the M35 in 56:54, followed by Dyfnallt Huws in 1:00:02, and Ian Mulligan in 1:08:06. Kevin Clark and Rhi Willmot were treated to Ian’s enthusiastic race commentary throughout the course, finishing in 1:08:07 and 1:08:05. AT Jones finished strong to take the win for the M60 category, followed by Ruth Harvey and Sue Jones who both took second place for their age categories (1:22:65 and 1:23:20 respectively).
On the same day, several Cybis also enjoyed a social run, topped off with some celebratory New Year’s cake!
Endurance Life Holyhead
The first event in a bumper weekend of racing was the Endurance Life Costal Trail, Holyhead. This race includes 10k, half-marathon, marathon and ultra-marathon distances. With blustery conditions and technical trails, competitors were in for a challenging journey along the beautiful clifftops of the Holyhead coastline.
The half-marathon course runs for 14.7 miles, including over 2000ft of climb. The first Cybis to tackle the trails were Rhi Willmot and Kevin Clark, who arrived home in a time of 2:37:28. Rhi finished as first overall female, winning a lovely gold medal. AT Jones also put in a strong performance to finish 2nd in the MV60 category, with a time of 3:22:52, and Sal Seeny made an incredibly impressive return to racing after being very poorly over the festive period, finishing in 5:35:09.
In the marathon, Sue Jones took on even more miles (26.7) and even higher climbs (2,264ft) putting in a brilliant performance to finish in 6:22:16 and 2nd in the FV55 category…
…and if those figures aren’t quite enough of a challenge, there is always the ultra distance! This course includes all of the muddy, traily, hily fun of the marathon and 10k combined, totalling a 33.5 mile distance and 3,549ft height (not to mention an early start whilst the sun is stillnrising). Ian Fergusson had a sterling race to finish 5th overall in 5:50:32, whilst Darren Seeny also battled over this epic distance to finish in 8:05:23.
Whilst some members were getting their fell shoes muddy, others donned their road trainers to take on the Twin Piers. Participants in this event are transported to Llandudno, racing back on a flat and fast 10k course along the promenade to Colwyn Bay. Some excellent club times were posted, with Ryan Roberts finishing in 5th overall and 3rd in the senior men’s category with a time of 34:28:00. Next in at position 11 was Andy Savage in 36:59:00, and taking the win for the men’s V45. More strong performances were given by Nigel Holmes who finished 4th in the V55 category in 44:50:00, Sian Ellis who took 19th overall female and 3rd in the V35 category with 49:02:00, and Di Holmes who achieved 4th in the V55 category with 53:19:00.
Peter Jones, Chris Thomas, David Ellis, Dewi Williams, Paul Maitland & Ieuan Davies also raced, so a very well done to all representing the club.
Borders League Abergele
It seems that Kevin Clark, Nigel and Diane Holmes had a lot of energy to burn off this weekend, featuring in more racing at the Borders League event in Abergele on Sunday. A beautifully sunny start to the day saw Kevin, Nigel and Di joined by a strong turnout from Cybi. Peter Jones was first home finishing in 31:16, followed by Chris Thomas in 32:55 and Kevin Clark in 33:05. Nigel Holmes shaved a little time off his course PB to finish in 35:13, followed by Sion Roberts in 38:29 and Diane Holmes who achieved a new 5M PB of 42:28.
Well done all, what a great start to 2018!
The first 2 weekends of October have seen runners from Cybi Striders covering some miles on the road and also in travelling to events.
4 members travelled down to Cardiff for the half marathon, which was also extra special as Izzy and Bradly from Alfies Army were running their first ever half marathon, and they have been training with us on Monday, Wednesday and Thursdays. Both did really well finishing in 1:49 for Bradly and 2:06 for Izzy.
Peter Jones was in Merseyside for the Mersey Tunnel 10k, an interesting race where you get the chance to run through the tunnel from Liverpool to Birkenhead, and then down the river to New Brighton, a relatively flat course apart from the climb out of the Tunnel
9 members made the trip to Capenhurst for the first race of the 2017-18 series, which saw a course record attendance of 386 athletes taking part. This is a fast flat 5-mile course consisting of 2 loops, definite PB route. Andy Savage was first Cybi home in the Mens race in 26th place and Rhi Willmot first Lady in 33rd place, with a new PB for 5 miles of 37:29. Nice to see a new face on the team, with Dewi competing in his first Borders League event

10 am saw the start of the Bangor 10k and half Marathon from the clock tower in the City Centre, you head out and down to the pier, this is great as you get the chance to see the leaders and other runners as you head to the end of the pier and back. After the pier, everyone heads up the cycle path that follows the old Penrhyn railway, just before the 4 mile point the half marathon runners head off towards Penrhyn Castle before going through Llandegai and the Castle grounds on their way back to the City Centre. The 10k continues up the path for a short distance before rounding a cone and heading back to the finish by the clock tower.
Dylan Jones and Tracy Lock were also running the 10k after winning their places at the Improvers course held by the club that finished the previous week.
Ryan Roberts finished 3rd in the 10k with another 3 Cybi Striders finishing in the top 10, with Andy Savage winning his age category. In the half marathon Ian Ferguson finished 6th overall on his first time out representing he club and also won his age category. Rhi Willmot ran an impressive race just missing out on a sub 1:40 but finishing 6th lady and 1st senior lady
The first event in the 2017-18 cross county calendar was held in Wrexham, on a flat course, unfortunately our club turnout was low with only Kevin representing the club after also running in the Bangor half in the morning. The next event is in Llandudno on the 21st October
Josia Rhisiart and Sue Jones represented the club in the MBNA Chester Marathon, with Josie finishing in a very respectable time of 3:51:30, unfortunately missing out on a good for age place in London by 1 minute 30 seconds
Well done everyone
The 2017-18 Borders league is about to start in a couple of weeks time, the league consists of 7 races between October and April and any members of Cybi Striders are welcome to come along and compete.
It doesn’t matter how fast or slow you are, as it is a great day out where you get to run with other runners from around the North West and North Wales in an individual and team event, with the cost to enter being £0, ZERO, NOTHING. The only stipulation is you need a club vest
Hopefully we will be arranging a minibus to go to most of the events, if not I am sure other runners will be happy to car share to help keep costs down.

It was a good start to the Border League season for both the male and female teams at the season opener in Caernarfon on the 9.10.16.
